CELEBRATES ON 96TH Birthday
Hanovers Oldes Resident Comes fro Family Noted for Longevity
Uriah J.M. Baughman, the oldest resident of Hanover, celebrated his 96th
birthday anniversary Thursday, receiving congratulations and gifts of remembrances
from relatives and friends. Mr. Baughman has been a resident of Hanover
for 45 years. He is a Civil War verteran, having served as a member of
Captain Barts Company G, 74th Pennsylvanis infrantry. He was discharged
at Clarksburg August 6, 1885. Prior to his service in the Army he was employed
in the navy yard, Washington D.C.
Mr Baughman was born in West Manheim Township, York county, on July 7,
1825. His parents wer the late John and Mary (BAIR)
Baughman. His childhood and yourth were spent on a farm. Later he
taught in the township schools and organized the first Sunday School in
that section of the county. He served as Justice of the Peace for some
years.
Coming from a family that enjoys the distinction of being unusually long
lived, Mr Baughman is the last surviving member.
His brother, David, died at the age of 91 years,
11 months and 21 days, his father aged 91 years and 28 days, his
sister Lydia, aged 90 years4 months and 13 days, his mother aged 89 years
9 months and 19 days, and his brother Jacob B aged 83 years 3 months and
4days. When these ages are considered it is doubtful of another single
family can produce such a record for longevity, and Mr. Baughman, the last
survivor, already has outlived his nearest kinsman by almost five years. |
